Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) is a compact, hot-pluggable transceiver used for both telecommunication and data communications applications. It interfaces a network device motherboard (for a switch, router, media converter or similar device) to a fiber optic or copper networking cable. SFPs are available in a variety of different form factors, such as SFP+, XFP, X2, and QSFP. They are used in a wide range of applications, including Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SONET/SDH, and InfiniBand. SFPs are designed to support different types of optical fiber, such as multi-mode and single-mode, as well as different wavelengths and data rates.
